Stained Glass Spectrum – Free Motion and Straight Line Quilting

Stained Glass Spectrum – Free Motion and Straight Line Quilting

After finishing the piecing on the Stained Glass Spectrum Quilt, I knew I wanted to do something special with the quilting so I got to brainstorming.

But first, basting.

I rented a space just for basting my quilt.

Just kidding.  After cleaning up from a party I rented this room for, I had enough time left to baste a quilt without interference from the pups and without moving the furniture in my house.  SO. MUCH. EASIER. My dream house has an empty room for basting.

I went through my Aurifil thread stash and found the best match for each section of the quilt so I could do some custom work.

I did some doodling and some quilting on scrap fabric but couldn’t quite find the right pattern that was catching my eye.  So I just had to make a sample block with some leftover fabrics and really practice.

I used my free motion foot to quilt all the bright prints first in their respective thread colors.  I marked the points on the first few blocks but after that I just winged it.  Good enough for me!

Then came the hard part.  I used my walking foot and lots and lots and lots of turning to quilt all of the straight lines.  Lots of turning, ya’ll.

If I put a good audiobook on, I could get through the straight line quilting on one triangle block in about 20 minutes. There are 80 triangles, guys.  I’ll let you do the math….

All the lines!

Boomer helped me check on my progress. So helpful, as always.

Worth it?  Worth it.

Finished pictures coming soon!
