Japanese Fabric Giveaway

I’m giving away five gorgeous fat quarters that I picked up at a local shop here in Japan.  I’m used to shopping in yards but these are actually fat quarter meters so you get a little more bang for your buck!  Don’t the prints just scream JAPAN?  I love the vibrant colors and detailed designs which are so representative of this country.

I thought it might be fun to tell you about my shopping experience in this new-to-me culture.  As I was browsing around the little fabric shop (which is part of a department store), I found these beautiful Japanese prints on the bolt.  The tags were entirely in Japanese but the price was listed around 70 yen, which is under $1.  Figuring that couldn’t possibly be the price for a meter, a went up to one of the employees to determine what quantity the price referred to.  I’m sure it was amusing game of charades to anyone watching.

Japanese Fabric Giveaway

The price was only 10 cm increments!  What a goofy way to list the price – I can’t imagine only wanting a 10 cm cut.  At the time of my little game of charades, I had grabbed a few bolts off the shelf and was debating which colors I wanted to purchase.  The kind employee insisted on taking the bolts from me, and getting them cut right away.  I didn’t know how to tell her that I wasn’t quite ready!

So I quickly finished up my selection and used a meter stick to motion how much I wanted cut. In true Japanese hospitality and efficiency, one lady cut my fabric while another simultaneously checked me out. They were so sweet and I’m sure I’ll be back!  They gave me a rewards card (at least I think so) so I should at least go back to see what I get in return!
