Interruption: Designed from Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks vol. 8

I have been just dying to show you this quilt, and now I can.  This week, Quiltmaker has published Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, volume 8.

In preparation for the edition, I volunteered to be a block tester.  Every few weeks, I would be given a potential block to make, testing that the dimensions and instructions were correct and easy to follow.  In addition to testing individual blocks, I volunteered to make an entire quilt based on some of the blocks that I tested.  I was given some beautiful fabric from Timeless Treasures to get started and very few rules on how to design the quilt.  My main requirement was that it have 3 of the blocks I tested in it.

Without further ado, this is “Interruption”:

I chose to make the quilt look woven, using four blocks I had tested.

  1. Walk About, Block #742, designed by Christ Hoover
  2. Diamond Galore, Block #730, designed by Susan Nelson
  3. Squared, Block #770, designed by Kelly Bowswer
  4. Diamonds in the Sky, Block #768, Designed by Alyce Blyth

The idea started with a lot of sketching.  I thought that some of the blocks, particularly Walk About, had the potential to really shine when repeated linearly. With such busy fabric and busy blocks, I also wanted to include a significant amount of negative space.

I must have changed the layout on my design wall a million times.  Special thanks to my good friend Jessie who put up with my constant bombardment of texts and pictures. Seriously, your advice was extremely helpful!

Phew, finally decided on an arrangement.

Basting is so much better with furry friends keeping watch!

I finished off the quilt with free motion stippling on my Janome.  I LOVE my machine, but I am so jealous of those that have access to a long-arm machine!

After quilting, I washed and dried the quilt to get that crinkly look I love so much.

Last but not least, I packed it up and shipped it off to Quiltmaker where it will be on display in their Golden, Colorado office from December 2, 2013 to February 28, 2014.
