Granny Squares Quilt

This past week, I had a great time piecing this Granny Squares Quilt.

You all know how much I love Craftsy Classes, and after watching Amy Gibson’s The Twisted Irish Chain class, I knew I wanted to try this quilt.  She does a great job showing some modern renditions of the classic Irish chain, but this one is by far my favorite.

I started by cutting out a LOT of little squares.  Unlike most Irish chain quilts which allow for quick chain piecing techniques, this one did not allow for shortcuts. That’s okay with me because cutting is my favorite part!

I started by laying out all the main squares on my design wall, and then working down the quilt adding in the 9 patches.  I pieced the outside blocks last just so I wouldn’t accidentally use a square on the outside edge of the 9-patch that I would need later.

I thought I was doing really well keeping track of everything until I got about half way through and looked over the entire quilt.  Two mistakes!  I added the one wrong gray print, and one wrong white print.  Thankfully I caught those before I had started sewing the rows together.

It took me about 24 hours to do all the cutting and piece all the blocks which was much faster than I anticipated!  I may have gotten sucked into it for most of the day though….

Who could resist those pretty April Showers prints!

I wish I could say I tried to do it, but I was pretty excited when some of the prints lined up perfectly at the seams.

I know I already have a quilt with the April Showers fabric line (Raincheck), but it just makes me so happy!  I’m not sure what quilting pattern is in store for this quilt yet as I always struggle with finishing quilts.  I don’t really love the quilting process, but I am anxious to put this one out for display so it must be done!
